We are a group of ESOL practitioners, national bodies, trade unions, student bodies, community representatives and organisations, and public sector employees from all over the UK.
The Action for ESOL campaign has been endorsed by several high-profile individuals, including John McDonnell MP, Clive Efford MP, Michael Morpurgo, Teresa Pearce MP, John Austin (former MP), Simon Danzcuk MP, and Ken Livingstone, Labour’s candidate for Mayor of London 2012.
Teresa Pearce, Labour MP for Erith and Thamesmead, actively supports the ESOL campaign against the cuts. Watch the video of her supporting the protest at Greenwich Community College in which she explains why she is against the cuts. On 30th August, she posted an article: ‘Teresa welcomes Government u-turn on funding restrictions for English language courses’
Mr Livingstonc comments that, ‘ESOL has given hundreds of thousands of Londoners an opportunity to learn new skills, find work, create new jobs and play a positive role in their communities.
I am deeply concerned about impact of cuts to ESOL funding, the introduction of fees, the abolition of the £4.5 million learner support fund for adults on low incomes and the removal of all funding from ESOL in the workplace.
I urge the Government to think again before making sweeping changes to ESOL which will have a devastating impact on the lives of thousands of Londoners.’
Further support of the campaign has been offered by John McDonnell MP: ‘ESOL classes open the door to so many opportunities for people and cutting ESOL effectively slams that door shut.
What chance have people got if they can’t speak the language? No chance.
That’s why ESOL is so important to so many and why it is critically important if we want people to participate in our society and make their contribution.’
Michael Morpurgo said of the Action for ESOL campaign, ‘You absolutely have my support in your campaign. All power to you.’
Clive Efford, MP for Eltham has offered his support saying, ‘I am more than happy to support this campaign in any way you feel I can be of assistance. I am glad to see that some action is being proposed in Greenwich.’
